Today, we mourn the passing of our beloved Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver, an extraordinary leader, public servant, and advocate for the people of New Jersey. Throughout her distinguished career, she broke barriers and paved the way for others, becoming the first African American woman to hold the position of Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly and later serving as the 2nd Lieutenant Governor alongside Governor Phil Murphy.
Lt. Governor Oliver’s unwavering dedication to championing causes such as affordable housing, educational equity, and social justice initiatives made her an inspiring advocate for marginalized communities. Her legacy serves as a reminder of the impact one dedicated individual can have on the lives of many.
